This is to inform you of my decision to retire from my position as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States effective upon the nomination and confirmation of my successor. It has been a great privilege, indeed, to have served as a member of the Court for 24 Terms. I will leave it with enormous respect for the integrity of the Court and its role under our Constitutional structure.

Dear Chief:

Please be advised that effective today, June 30, 2015, I hereby retire from office as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States under the provisions of 28 U.S.C. § 371(a), having attained the age and met the service requirements of subsection (c) of that section. I understand that, upon my retirement, I will receive, during the remainder of my lifetime, an annuity equal to the salary I was receiving at the time of retirement.

It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve our country as a Supreme Court Justice, and to have shared the last year of my time on the high court with you.

Before leaving Washington for Arizona, Michelle Hancock of Lakeside had a chance to visit today with Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra O'Connor in the justice's offices. Michelle competed in the 55th National Spelling Bee earlier in the week.

We, the proud members of Phoenix Chapter of the Charter 100, proclaim President Ronald Reagan's appointment of Judge Sandra Day O'Connor as the first woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court the most significant honor to great women in the history of the United States.

We join the people of this fair nation in ringing the bells of destiny which are sounding out salutations to Sandra.

May Sandra's allegiance to the future be that of perpetuating the same unique qualities which have echoed throughout the chambers of her life.
